New APEAL research on parenting and mental health

parenting

A new study published in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, authored by a team including APEAL members Mila Kingsbury and Ian Colman, investigates the impact of harsh and positive parenting practices in childhood on adolescent mental health. New APEAL research published

APEAL Lab alum Dylan Johnson has published a first-author paper in Psychological Medicine. The study assessed profiles of internalizing and externalizing problems from middle to late childhood, and their associations with suicidal ideation in adolescence. Those with recurrent or increasing symptoms were at increased risk of suicidal ideation. Encouragingly, children whose symptoms were initially high, but decreased across childhood, did not show elevated risk of suicidal ideation in adolescence.

APEAL research links early life stress, mental health, and migraine

headache

APEAL trainee Nicole Hammond has published a first-author paper in Headache. The paper showed that early life stressors including family dysfunction, punitive parenting, and parental depressive symptoms are associated with migraine headache in adolescence, and these associations are mediated by symptoms of depression and anxiety in childhood.

Congrats, Nicole! Click here to read the paper.

APEAL lab at CAPE

The annual scientific symposium of the Canadian Academy of Psychiatric Epidemiology was held this year in beautiful Quebec City. This year’s conference focused on the use of administrative health data in psychiatric epidemiology research. With lab director Ian Colman on sabbatical in Oslo, APEAL lab sent two representatives in his stead. Mila Kingsbury (research associate) and Nathan Cantor (MSc student) both presented posters at the conference. Many thanks to host Alain Lesage and the entire organizing committee!

Good neighbourhoods may mitigate effects of life stress

neighbourhoodNew research from APEAL lab suggests that neighbourhood social cohesion (i.e., sense of trust and shared responsibility within the neighbourhood) may protect adolescents from some of the known negative consequences of experiencing stressful events in childhood. The paper, authored by APEAL members Mila Kingsbury, Zahra Clayborne, and Ian Colman, in conjunction with UK researcher James Kirkbride, was recently published in Psychological Medicine. Congratulations to all involved!
